Mobile payments at the Oktoberfest

Back in July, the festival CEO, Josef Schmid, announced the addition of a cashless payment solution. Blue Code,  in partnership with MeinFest , offers a Mobile payment  option on the Wiesn. Their App is connected directly to the user’s bank account. The payment process is simple and quick. The merchant enters the amount to be paid on the merchant portal and scans the barcode on the client’s phone. The client can then add a tip before the transaction is completed. Furthermore, recurring clients benefit from a bonus program. However, the Blue Code app is unfortunately currently only available to adult EU citizen owning a German or Austrian bank account.

Naturally, we had to go on the fairground ourselves and try it.

Blue Code and MeinFest have made their payment method available to fairground sellers, market merchants and hosts. While the bigger beer halls have not taken part in the program this year, around 50 smaller merchants are participating. Signs and stickers are used to identify the participating merchants.

Germany still widely prefers cash payments  and bank transfer. It will therefore be very interesting to see how the public respond to this new offer and how it will develop in the next years.
