iDEAL increasingly popular in foreign shops

In 2017, almost a third of iDEAL payments came from foreign online stores, as reported in Currence’s 2017 annual report.

An increasing number of merchants outside the Netherlands choose to offer the payment method in their online shop. Currently, Dutch customers can pay with iDEAL in over 7000 stores in 60 countries.
The Dutch payment method is gaining popularity, with usage growing by 33.7% in 2017.

New application for iDEAL are partly responsible for its strong growth. The payment method is notably increasingly being used for mutual payments by consumers, with mobile apps and so-called payment requests, and through the iDEAL QR code.

Earlier this year, iDEAL reported that Dutch bank customers made over 378 transactions with them, for a cumulated value exceeding 33 billion euros. The popularity of the payment method is notably attributed to its high security standards and uniform rules and regulations.
