Cashless payments by smartphone at Oktoberfest

The article in brief

CEO Josef Schmid announces cashless payment for Wiesn 2017.

Digitization of Oktoberfest - just a few weeks before the beginning of the world famous festival, Josef Schmid (CDU), Wiesn’s chief executive, announced that visitors will be able to pay without cash this year.

How it works

Through "Blue Code", a smartphone app which can be connected to a German or Austrian bank account, will allow Wiesn visitors to enjoy a cashless experience, in a partnership with MeinFest. A single-use barcode is used by the app to debit the corresponding amount from the user’s account.

The dream becomes reality?

Whether this digital dream comes true, however, is still unclear. It has not yet been announced how many tent and driving companies have agreed to participate. Furthermore, in order to be able to use this app, Wiesn guests must be EU citizens and at least 18 years old, otherwise: Do not forget to bring cash!
