Founded in 2011 in London, GoCardless is an online direct debit provider. It was first known as GroupPay. Their mission is to bring Direct Debit into the digital age. Currently, GoCardless work with over 30,000 merchants across Europe, processing £3 billion worth of payments annually. The BBC, TechCrunch, the Guardian, CNN and Wired are renowned clients of GoCardless.
GoCardless process direct debit transactions, one of the most popular payment methods in Europe. Merchants choosing to partner with GoCardless benefit from a streamlined and fully-automated payments service while only charging for successful payments instead of adding the usual hidden costs, especially for chargebacks. Its platform is designed to facilitate recurring payments.
Customers can set up their mandate online and merchants can automate the payment process via GoCardless dashboard, direct API integration or with one of more than 100 partner integrations in platforms like Sage, Zuora or Salesforce. Using GoCardless ensures you get paid on time, bringing you improved cash flow and reduced admin.
GoCardless can process, according to the localization of the merchants, different types of direct debit methods. In the European zone, SEPA Direct debit is offered, while merchants in UK can accept payments with BACS and Swedish merchants, with Autogiro. Offering these local payment methods help merchants capture a bigger portion of the market.
The European Union, in an attempt to harmonize payments across Europe, created SEPA, or the Single Euro Payments Area. SEPA includes all 28 European Union member states, the 4 members of the European Free Trade Association, which is comprised of Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, as well as Monaco and San Marino. SEPA Direct debit has been implemented for all 19 eurozone countries. It can also be used for transaction made in Euros in countries using other denominations.
GoCardless specialize in facilitating cross-border commerce for global merchants. While it is currently accepting payments in Europe and the United Kingdom, they are working on entering new markets. While their headquarters are located in London, local offices are operated in France, Spain and the USA. In Australia, they will soon be accepting APCA and in New Zealand, Payments NZ. In North America, they will be processing pre-authorized debits (PADs) in Canada, and ACH in the United States. Additionally, they will soon enter the North European market in Denmark, with Betalingsservices, and in Norway, with AvtaleGiro.
